Chapter Seventeen
Lee
A full week passed without communication from Hudson after Lee invited him out for ice cream — almost two weeks since they’d spent the night together at Hudson’s farmhouse. Lee tried not to let it eat at him, but the more he tried to fight off feelings of being abandoned, the stronger they became.
It looked as though Hudson had been using him. Lee had thought Hudson was a good guy. He was charming and polite, thoughtful and generous, and best of all, he’d seemed genuinely interested in Lee. ‘Seemed’ was the key word, because it certainly didn’t seem that way anymore.
Lee sat at his desk, unable to focus. There was a stack of very urgent work for him to get through, but he couldn’t bring his thoughts to align. Every time he tried, his mind sneaked in something about Hudson, and he spiraled out of control as he tried to get his situation figured out.
Hudson had played Prince Charming up until the point he’d gotten Lee into bed. Since then, Lee hadn’t heard much from him. Their text communications were brief, and every time Lee called, Hudson didn’t pick up the phone.
Hudson was ghosting him now they’d had sex, and it stung.
Lee folded up the corner of one of the papers on the desk in front of him. Three of his teachers were on emergency sick leave after their carpooling vehicle been involved in an accident the night before. No one was seriously injured, but for the next two weeks all three of them were on doctor ordered bed rest. Then there was the issue of the drama teacher, whose ailing mother had just passed away, and who needed to fly across the country to take care of the estate and funeral arrangements. He needed to find replacements for all of them, but on such short notice, their modest pool of substitute teachers hadn’t offered any availability.
Lee wanted nothing more than to collapse on the desk, close his eyes, and let the weight of his emotions bog him down. When it rained, it poured. He’d gone from what felt like the best days of his life to the worst almost overnight, and he had no one to blame but himself. If he’d been responsible about his attraction to Hudson, and not fallen so fast and so hard, he wouldn’t be moping like a lovesick teenager.
He rubbed his eyes, shook his head, and rolled the chair back from his desk. Being sad wasn’t helping him fix any of his problems. He needed to get out there and figure out how they were going to operate today with four teachers out and no substitutes available until tomorrow.
Lee left the office. Principal Hart’s door was closed. He figured she was just as busy as he was trying to come up with solutions. As it stood right now, Lee was contemplating dividing the classes between the remaining teachers. It would mean classrooms would be chaotic for today, and not much learning would be done, but it couldn’t be helped.
